Your AR-15 Is Only as Effective as Your Training With It
Defensive Rifle Course at Our Private Outdoor Range — Okeechobee, FL
Most rifle owners in South Florida who keep an AR-15 for home defense have put rounds downrange at a static range — and that is the full extent of their training. Standing still and shooting at a paper target 25 yards away tells you almost nothing about how you would actually perform in a defensive situation with a rifle. How do you move through your home with a long gun? How do you use cover effectively when the threat is not standing still? How do you operate your rifle when your heart rate is spiking and your hands are shaking and every decision you make in the next few seconds matters? These are not questions that most rifle owners in Palm Beach County and Broward County have real answers to — and they are exactly the questions the Suburban Protector Defensive Rifle Course is built to answer.
Three Hours of Scenario-Based Rifle Training at the Only Facility in South Florida Built for It
The Suburban Protector Defensive Rifle Course is a three-hour, scenario-based training program held exclusively at Smoke & Barrel Gun Club — our private 1.25-acre outdoor range in Okeechobee, Florida. This is not a square range with paper targets and a cold line. It is a purpose-built tactical training facility with three full-size training vehicles, VTAC boards, barricades, a full obstacle course, and a wrap-around berm that gives us the space and safety clearances to run the kind of dynamic rifle drills this course demands. No other facility in South Florida is equipped to deliver this level of training. You will move. You will shoot from behind cover. You will engage multiple targets at different distances and angles. You will experience what it actually feels like to run your rifle under controlled stress — and you will leave knowing exactly how you perform and where you need to improve.
The course is led by Mike Kneuer — NRA Pistol Instructor, Tactical Hyve Level 1 certified, and a competitive shooter with 22 years of carry experience. Mike’s approach is not to intimidate or overwhelm — it is to meet every student exactly where they are and build competency in a way that actually sticks. No prior rifle training is required to attend. Whether you have never taken a formal rifle course or you are an experienced shooter who wants to add real defensive context to your skills, this course is designed to give you more than you came in with.

Leave With Real Competency — Not Just Trigger Time.
Walk away with real competency — not just trigger time. You'll have trained in the scenarios that matter for home defense, understand your rifle's capabilities and limitations, and have a clear picture of where to go next in your training.
Defensive Rifle graduates leave Okeechobee with a fundamentally different relationship with their firearm. The AR-15 that was sitting in a corner as a symbol of preparedness becomes a tool they actually know how to use — under pressure, on the move, in the scenarios that matter. That shift from owning a rifle to being trained with one is the difference between feeling prepared and actually being prepared.
