Firearm Training in Palm Beach & Broward | Suburban Protector

Group firearm training for south florida shooters

The Standard Most South Florida Training Does Not Meet

NRA Certified, Tactical Hyve Level 1, USPSA Competitor, and Twenty-Two Years of Daily Concealed Carry

Your instructor is the largest single variable in whether training changes anything.

Not the range. Not the gear. Not which course you picked. A good instructor will find the thing you have been doing wrong for years in about four minutes and hand you a fix. A weekend-certified one will watch you shoot, tell you it looked good, and take your money.

Here is who you would actually be training with.

Mike Kneuer, Founder and Lead Instructor

Broward county firearm instructor

Mike has carried a firearm every day for twenty-two years. Not as a job requirement. As a decision he made and then spent two decades taking seriously.

He started Suburban Protector because of a specific problem he kept seeing in South Florida. People were taking classes, shooting at paper, and going home believing they were prepared. The instruction was not wrong exactly. It was just aimed at the wrong thing. Nobody was teaching people what happens when they have to move, or decide, or do any of it with their hands shaking.

Every course here is built around one question: what does this student need to be able to do when their heart rate is at 160 and they have two seconds?

Mike's Credentials

  • NRA Certified Pistol Instructor. The nationally recognized standard for qualified firearm instruction.
  • Tactical Hyve Level 1 Pistol Instructor. An advanced instructor program with a high failure rate, focused on mastery of the shooting fundamentals curriculum. Most Florida instructors have not attempted it.
  • Stop the Bleed Certified Instructor. Nationally affiliated emergency bleeding control training, recognized by the American College of Surgeons.
  • USCCA Member. The largest membership organization for concealed carriers in the country.
  • USPSA Competitor. Practical shooting competition that tests speed, accuracy, and decision-making under a clock.
  • Twenty-two years of daily concealed carry.

A certification is a starting point, not an achievement. It means somebody passed a course and says nothing about the years since. Mike keeps taking courses from instructors better than he is, which is the part that actually matters.

Greg Massari, Assistant Instructor

Greg is the second set of eyes on every course, and his role is not decorative.

While Mike is working one on one with a student, Greg is watching everyone else. That catches form problems, safety issues, and improvement opportunities that a single instructor physically cannot see. It is also what makes it possible to run a ten-student course without anyone getting less attention than they paid for.

He competes in USPSA and IDPA Limited Division, which means what he brings is practical shooting experience rather than a classroom credential. He has spent years on a clock, under pressure, in front of people, and that shows up in what he notices.

His presence on the line is calm and precise, and that is what lets students push past their comfort zone without worrying that the environment is getting away from anyone.

Two sets of eyes per session is genuinely uncommon in South Florida firearm training. Most instructors work alone.

What We Teach That Most Training Skips

The most important part of a defensive encounter happens before anyone pulls a trigger. It happens in the two or three seconds where you are recognizing what is happening, sorting your options, managing your own fear response, and making a decision you will live with permanently.

Nothing about standing in a lane prepares you for that. So every course here is built around three things most training ignores.

Situational awareness. Recognizing a developing problem before it arrives, which is the only intervention that costs nothing.

Decision-making under stress. Thinking clearly while your body is actively working against you. This is trainable and almost nobody trains it.

Mechanics that hold under pressure. Technical skill that executes correctly when there is no time to think about executing it.

We also teach the legal framework around use of force in Florida, because carrying without understanding that is its own category of dangerous. A prepared person is not somebody who shoots accurately. It is somebody who knows when not to, and what to do when they decide they have no choice.
