Firearm Training in Okeechobee, FL — Gun Lessons, CCW Classes & Shooting Instruction
You bought a firearm because out here, that decision makes sense. In Okeechobee, you’re not relying on a security guard or a two-minute police response time. You’re the first line of defense — for your property, your family, and yourself. Maybe you’ve been shooting since you were old enough to hold a rifle. Maybe you carry every day without giving it a second thought. Firearms aren’t new to you. But there’s a difference between familiarity and readiness — and that gap is exactly where things go wrong when it matters most.
Most experienced gun owners in Okeechobee would admit, if pressed, that their training hasn’t kept pace with their confidence. That’s not a criticism — it’s just honest. Familiarity breeds routine, and routine breeds assumptions. You assume your draw is clean. You assume you’ll stay calm. You assume the muscle memory will surface under pressure. But adrenaline doesn’t care about assumptions. When your hands are shaking and the situation in front of you is nothing like a static paper target on a quiet afternoon at the range, what you’ve actually practiced is the only thing that shows up — and untrained habits show up loudest of all.
Okeechobee is a community that understands self-reliance. You don’t wait for someone else to solve your problems, and you don’t cut corners on the things that protect your family. That same standard applies to your firearm. Owning one responsibly means training seriously — not just shooting for recreation, but building the kind of skill and decision-making that holds up when the stakes are real. The space between knowing how to shoot and knowing how to respond is where lives are decided. Suburban Protector was built to close that gap — and for Okeechobee residents, the range where we train is practically in your own county.
Most Okeechobee Gun Owners Grew Up Around Firearms — But Growing Up Around Them Isn't the Same as Training With Them.

Okeechobee's Most Trusted Firearm Instructor — And the Range Is Practically in Your Backyard.
Suburban Protector is led by Mike Kneuer — NRA Certified Pistol Instructor, Tactical Hyve Level 1 Certified, USCCA member, Stop the Bleed instructor, and competitive USPSA shooter with 22 years of concealed carry experience. Mike didn’t walk out of a weekend seminar and print a certificate. He pursued the most demanding instructor development programs available anywhere in the country, earned credentials that most Florida firearm trainers have never even looked at, and built every single class around one question: when this student drives home from the range, are they genuinely more prepared to protect themselves and the people depending on them?
Suburban Protector is a Florida nonprofit — which means there’s no sales agenda, no upsell, and no filler. Just training built around your readiness. Okeechobee is different from every other community we serve — and we mean that as a compliment. This is a town where firearms have never been a political talking point. They’re tools. They’re part of the culture, part of the land, and for many families here, part of daily life going back generations. But owning a firearm and being genuinely trained to use one under pressure are two very different things. Suburban Protector exists for the people who understand that distinction — and who are ready to close that gap. With more than 50 five-star Google reviews from students across South Florida, we’ve built a reputation on one thing: instruction that actually holds up when it matters.
For Okeechobee residents, our outdoor training location isn’t a road trip — it’s practically home. Smoke & Barrel Gun Club, our private 1.25-acre tactical range, sits just outside Okeechobee and is where we run the kind of scenario-based defensive drills that no indoor range in Florida can replicate. This is where fundamentals get tested under real conditions — movement, distance, decision-making under stress. For indoor sessions, we also work with a professional licensed facility. Whether you’ve carried for years and never had a single formal lesson, or you’re picking up a firearm for the very first time, every session is built entirely around you — your firearm, your situation, and the level of readiness you want to reach.

Firearm Training Courses for Okeechobee Gun Owners — Built Around How You Actually Live Out Here.

Okeechobee is not like the rest of South Florida. It’s cattle country, lake country, wide-open land where people have always taken care of themselves and their families without waiting for someone else to do it. Firearms here aren’t a new concept — but formal training often is. Suburban Protector was built for exactly this: taking people who already respect firearms and giving them the skills, structure, and confidence to use them when it actually matters.
Here is what we offer:
Private Firearm Lessons — $125 per session
One-on-one shooting lessons for Okeechobee residents at every point on the experience spectrum — from first-time owners who want to start right, to seasoned shooters who’ve noticed something is off and can’t identify what. Private instruction is the fastest route to real improvement because there’s no group to hide in and no generic feedback. Every session is built around your firearm, your grip, your habits — with live correction after every repetition. We cover stance, grip, sight alignment, trigger control, accuracy fundamentals, and defensive application. For Okeechobee students, this is local training done at a serious level. Firearm rental available for $50.
Florida Concealed Carry Certification (CWFL) — $200–$250
Plenty of people in Okeechobee already carry. Fewer have trained for the moment when carrying actually matters. Our Florida CWFL certification is live-fire from start to finish — no slideshows, no box-checking. We cover Florida carry laws as they apply to rural and agricultural settings, safe holster draw, concealment techniques, and the kind of high-pressure decision-making that doesn’t freeze under stress. Instructor Mike Kneuer provides the NRA-certified sign-off required for your Florida CWFL application. If you’re going to carry in Okeechobee County, do it prepared.
Protector Level 1 — Pistol Fundamentals — $150
A three-hour beginner to intermediate pistol course at our private outdoor range — and for Okeechobee residents, this range is practically home. Smoke & Barrel Gun Club sits just outside town, a 1.25-acre tactical range where we run drills that no indoor facility in Florida can replicate. Limited to 10 students. This course is built for the Okeechobee gun owner who’s spent time shooting but has never had structured instruction — who wants a real foundation, not just more trigger time. Covers stance, grip, sight alignment, trigger control, live-fire accuracy drills, and multi-target engagement.
Protector Level 2 — Concealed Carry Concepts — $200
For Okeechobee residents who already carry and want to stop pretending that a permit equals preparation. This course closes the gap between having a firearm on your hip and knowing exactly what to do with it when seconds count. Drawing from a holster, shooting on the move, vehicle-based defense, cover and concealment, and high-stress magazine changes under live-fire pressure. Out here, the nearest backup may be minutes away. This course is built around that reality. Includes Florida CCW instructor sign-off.
EmpowHER Women-Only Firearm Training — $100
A women-only firearm training program for women in Okeechobee and surrounding rural communities who want to learn on their own terms — without the range culture, without the condescension, and without needing to pretend they’re comfortable when they’re not. No experience required. Firearms, eye protection, and ear protection are all provided. Groups of 4 to 8 women. In a county where a woman on a ranch or a rural property may be the first — and only — line of defense, this course is not optional. It’s essential.
Group Firearm Training — from $100 per person
Custom group shooting training for Okeechobee families, agricultural operations, ranching crews, local organizations, and community groups. Outdoor sessions run at Smoke & Barrel — your local range — where we have the space to run real scenarios, not just static target drills. Every session is structured around your group’s actual goals and experience level. Okeechobee groups don’t need a watered-down suburban curriculum. They need training that fits how they live and work.
Stop the Bleed Certification — $75 per person (groups of 4+)
In Okeechobee County, the distance between an emergency and emergency services can be measured in miles and minutes. Stop the Bleed closes the gap that distance creates. This nationally affiliated bleeding control course covers tourniquet application, wound packing, and direct pressure technique. No medical background required. One hour. All materials included. If you own a firearm in Okeechobee and you don’t know how to stop a bleed, you’re only half prepared. This course finishes the job.
Okeechobee Gun Owners Don't Just Own Firearms — They Leave Knowing Exactly How to Use Them.
There is a moment that sneaks up on people in Okeechobee. You have owned a firearm for years — maybe your whole life. You grew up around guns. You know how to shoot. But knowing how to shoot and being trained to respond are two entirely different things. And deep down, when you think about what could actually happen on a rural road after dark, at a gas station off 441, or on your own property miles from the nearest backup — you know the difference matters.
That question does not get answered by confidence alone. It gets answered by training — the kind that puts you in realistic situations, forces real decisions, and builds the kind of muscle memory that holds up when your hands are shaking and your heart rate is through the roof. Not a crowded weekend class. Not a checklist course designed to get you a certificate. Real, focused instruction built around how you live and what you are actually protecting.
That is what Okeechobee residents get when they train with Suburban Protector. Mike works with gun owners who are honest with themselves — who know the difference between familiarity and readiness, and who are done letting that gap stay open. And here is what makes training in Okeechobee different from anywhere else in South Florida: Smoke & Barrel Gun Club, the private 1.25-acre tactical range where Suburban Protector runs scenario-based and outdoor drills, is right in your backyard. Okeechobee students do not drive an hour to train the right way. They train locally, on real terrain, running real drills that no indoor range in the region can replicate.
Okeechobee is a community that has always understood self-reliance. The land demands it. The distance from everything demands it. If you own a firearm and live here, the only thing separating preparedness from assumption is the training in between.
Mike is one call away.
